INDUSTRY NEWS: NEW BUILDINGS TO REPORT AND LIMIT THEIR EMBODIED CARBON

On May 17, the Vancouver City Council voted in favour of significant changes to the Vancouver Building Bylaw (VBBL) that would require all new buildings to report and limit their embodied carbon by 10 to 20 percent, starting in 2023 and ramping up in 2025, a first in North America.

The changes aim to address the climate crisis and meet targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2025, buildings will have to meet Embodied Carbon limits that are halfway to the 2030 goals, and by mid-2023, they can’t be more than two times the 2018 baseline.

Other changes include:
  • All new multi-family buildings will require cooling systems by 2025.
  • All new multi-family buildings will require air filtration to protect residents from intense heat waves and fire smoke pollution by 2025.
